MTG Commander 2014 Decklists

Wally D. - MTG Casual Play Writer

Welcome to MTGCasualPlay.com. Today’s article may serve as a reference for those wanting to browse the entire decklist of the commander 2014 product. Of course, if you have read my articles before, you know that I occasionally love to give a few opinions on new Magic the Gathering™ product. Today is no exception and I am excited to say that these new mono colored commander decks are oober cool and downright amazing! Let’s review!

Included in every deck is a Medallion (ie: Sapphire Medallion) that has not seen a reprint since their original release in the Tempest Block. There is also the cycle of Diamonds (ie: Charcoal Diamond) for each color that will help escalate their respective decks in the mana department. The 5 “Lieutenants” (ie: Tyrant’s Familiar) provide each deck with a “second in charge” beater that live up to their full potential if the deck’s General (Commander) is in play. Finally, every deck also has a Sol Ring! Shocker! Haha!

Each mono colored commander deck has three potential commanders of your deck: a Planeswalker that can be cast from the Command Zone, a new Legendary Creature from Magic’s past and a slightly on-theme reprint as a third option. In addition to the new Legendary Creature, each Planeswalker is also a previously unprinted version of a character from Magic lore.

I will be putting out a Top 10 Commander 2014 Cards for EDH article in the very near future, so check back soon!

Anyway, You came here for decklists, so, here they are!

White Commander 2014 Deck – Forged in Stone

The white mono colored commander deck is lead by the Stoneforge Mystic look-a-like planewsalker Nahiri, the Lithomancer and is based around equipment with an angel and token subtheme. Nahiri was the planeswalker that joined Ugin and Sorin to lock away the Eldrazi.

Awesome Reprints: Sun Titan is always good and border-line staple for white commander decks. I am also a huge fan of the reprinting of Skullclamp which is easily a top 10 artifact in the world of EDH/Commander. Other noteable reprints are Grand Abolisher, Adarkar Valkyrie, Cathars’ Crusade and Emeria, the Sky Ruin.

Intriguing New Rares: Containment Priest is all the rage and may even lead Vintage/Legacy players buying this product just for her services. Definitely the True-Name Nemesis of 2014. Masterwork of Ingenuity and Comeuppance seem fun and possibly underrated.

Blue Commander 2014 Deck – Peer Through Time

The blue mono colored commander deck is lead by the planewsalker Teferi, Temporal Archmage and is based around islands. Haha! Well, Islands, control and the Morph ability.

Awesome Reprints: Ixidron and Willbender are must have’s for a morph EDH deck. Cyclonic Rift is a staple in Blue so good to see it here. Artisan of Kozilek is an interesting include while the reprinting of Thran Dynamo should hopefully bring the price down on this solid mana rock. Rite of Replication is here as well. All in all, blue has some really good reprints!

Intriguing New Rares: Reef Worm wins 100 points in the bursting with flavor category while Stitcher Geralf pulls in a close 2nd and takes the silver medal. Crown of Doom shenanigans seem inevitable, I dig it.

Black Commander 2014 Deck – Sworn to Darkness

The blue mono colored commander deck is lead by the planewsalker Ob Nixilis of the Black Oath (before he lost his spark and became a demon) and is based around sacrifice, death, destruction and an uncomfortable amount of demon baddies.

Awesome Reprints: Overflowing with solid Black EDH cards! Bloodgift Demon, Grave Titan, Crypt Ghast, and Shriekmaw are just a sampling of kitchen table dwellers in this deck that we have seen time and time again. Mutilate and Black Sun’s Zenith are solid board wipes with perfect timing on their reprint.

Intriguing New Rares: Geralf’s sister, Ghoulcaller Gisa, proves that flavor runs in the family and teams well with Flesh Carver. Overseer of the Damned will be a feared menace for years to come. Wake the Dead will catch anyone off guard… I will stop here, but I could go on, and on!

Red Commander 2014 Deck – Built From Scratch

The red mono colored commander deck is lead by the goblin planewsalker Daretti, Scrap Savant and is based around artifacts and artifact recursion with a goblin subtheme. Most commander players will agree that the focus on the Artifact and Recursion theme in this commander pre-constructed deck was a home run for flavor and a welcome boost to red’s color identity.

Awesome Reprints: In my opinion, the best reprints are found in the Red Commander Deck. Value can be found in the reprinting of Wurmcoil Engine, Chaos Warp, Solemn Simulacrum, Goblin Welder and Caged Sun. The Red deck provides the best bang for your buck with reprints!

Intriguing New Rares: Feldon of the Third Path is on-theme with Red Artifacts, but honestly, he also fits in any deck that has critters in the graveyard. Flamekin Village provides hastiness from a non-basic land. Dualcaster Mage begs to be broken with it’s copy on a stick ability. Then there is the Living Death for robots… Scrap Mastery. Oh my!

Green Commander 2014 Deck – Guided By Nature

The green mono colored commander deck is lead by the Ice Age elven planewsalker Freyalise, Llanowar’s Fury and is based around the elf tribe, fast mana and big beasts.

Awesome Reprints: It’s just not an elf deck without Ezuri, Renegade Leader. Priest of Titania was once a hard to find common from long ago. Good to see it reprinted. Skullclamp. Heck ya.

Intriguing New Rares: Wave of Vitriol will cleanse the board in a game changing way. Lifeblood Hydra is a sleeping giant in EDH and Song of the Dryads will be undervalued. Then there is Titania, Protector of Argoth that begs to be built around!
