GLARING SPOTLIGHT is a Magic the Gathering™ column featuring a card that may have gone over-looked during the the building of your EDH Commander deck. Today we discuss Glaring Spotlight.
CARD: Glaring Spotlight
EXPANSION: Gatecrash – Rare
Creatures your opponents control with hexproof can be the targets of spells and abilities you control as though they didn’t have hexproof.
, Sacrifice Glaring Spotlight: Creatures you control gain hexproof until end of turn and can’t be blocked this turn.
Beating Hexproof Generals
How could I not dedicate the first post of the Glaring Spotlight column to it’s namesake? With the M14 rule change, EDH circles have been moaning and groaning about Hexproof Generals such as Sigarda, Host of Herons and Uril, the Miststalker becoming too powerful. Let’s face it, staring down a roided-up Hexproof Commander and not being able to use your spot removal can create an uneasy, queasy feeling.
Glaring Spotlight, however, states that you can use any kind of spot removal you choose as if the creature did not have hexproof. So go ahead and cast Condemn to put Sigarda on the bottom of it’s owner’s library, Path to Exile Uril, or blow Geist of Saint Traft up with a Hero’s Downfall. Glaring Spotlight is the kryptonite to these Super Commanders.
Glaring Spotlight on Offense
What’s not to like about paying for your creatures to be unblockable and hexproof until end of turn. For Token and Aggro decks, this could be a game finisher. By turning on the spotlight, green could put Craterhoof Behemoth into play, swing, and smash face or Sliver Legion could blast by blockers untouched and untouchable with his army of slivers.
Glaring Spotlight is an absolute must for your EDH/Commander deck if you are having trouble with hexproof generals in your meta. The Spotlight can also be a game finisher for an aggro deck that needs it’s militia to be able to blast through unblocked (and hexproof) in a mass alpha strike.
