Chainer, Dementia Master – Mono Black EDH Deck

Chainer, Dementia Master EDH Deck

UPDATED: February 2014

A few months ago, I realized that my Monster binder had an overabundance of Black MTG cards. My “extras” caught my attention as fun cards that did not have an EDH deck to call home. Sacrifice effects, Reanimation, and Graveyard manipulation, hmmm, sounds like good times. After the initial chaos of pushing these misfits into an organized pile of chaos my Chainer EDH Deck was born. I have always liked the idea of having opponents sacrificing permanents and then me digging through their graveyard to use what they threw away. It is for this reason that my Multi-Player Chainer build will carry with it a “sacrifice” theme, hence the deck title, Chainer, Sacrifice Master.

Don’t let my decklist fool you, not all of these cards were extra and just collecting dust in my binder. Once I settled on Chainer as my 7th EDH General, I took to TCGPlayer.com and my local game stores to order extra parts and hard-hitters to help the deck work. Free agent aquisitions Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed and Kokusho, the Evening Star have been included and are a vital part of our win conditions.

Win Conditions

Speaking of win conditions… what are the easiest paths to victory?
Koko Puffs Loop: Use Kokusho, the Evening Star along with a Sac Outlet and our commander, Chainer, Dementia Master to drain all of our opponents life-total at the same time. Kokusho is one of Chainer’s best chances of winning a multi-player game and hopefully will stay clean and free from the Commander Ban List. For back up, Gary can also make an appearance (Grey Merchant of Asphodel) or join in on the fun.

Infinite Mana/Vampire Win. Use Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief along with infinite mana to let our favorite bloodsucker drain our opponents for an infinite amount of damage.

Creature/Aggro. Use sacrifice effects to clean up the battlefield and allow our beaters like Massacre Wurm, Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief and Sheoldred, Whispering One to do their dirty work. We can also make quite a few zombie tokens with Ghoulcaller Gisa and Grave Titan. We can add to our attack by digging through graveyards using Chainer, Dementia Master, Geth, Lord of the Vault or reanimation spells and add to our army of the undead.

What is THAT card doing in there?

Since a lot of this deck was created by pulling cards out of my trade binder, there are still some questionable deck choices. However, some of these are just because I like them and wanted to use them.
Elbrus, the Binding Blade: Yes, a very bad equipment, I know, but this is included for the fun factor. I have been able to flip him a time or two already and looking down at a 13/13 Trample, Intimidate, Flying demon is good-times!

Stronghold Overseer. Yes, I know, another bad card. However, if I can get the mana doubling to work, he can neuter token armies or swing in (unblockable) for a ton of damage. UPDATE: Sigh, took Stronghold Overseer out for Nirkana Revenant.

I have played this EDH deck quite a bit already, and it is currently one of my favorite to play. So, let’s take a look at the decklist and please leave your comments or thoughts below. ALSO…. COMING SOON… CHAINER, SACRIFICE MASTER PRIMER!

I have found Disciple of Griselbrand to be a very good sac outlet, and Insidious Dreams has been great.

    1. Welcome to MTGCasualPlay.com and thank you for commenting on my Chainer, Dementia Master EDH Deck. 🙂

I believe that I am actually in need of an additional sacrifice outlet and will give the Disciple of Griselbrand a try. I have never seen Insidious Dreams before and really like the idea of pitching Sheoldred or Kokusho to the graveyard in order to tutor. In fact, this looks to fill the slot currently held by Diabolic Tutor as soon as I get one.

Great recommendations! I will be giving these cards a test in the near future.

  1. I run a similar version but I use Blood Artist and Falkenrath Noble for extra life and alternate mass kill . Also if it’s a sacrifice deck you might want to add Diabolic Intent awesome tutor for this type of deck .

    1. Hi Monty, thank you for visiting MTGCasualPlay.com it is always great to have feedback and comments.

Thank you for the suggestion on Diabolic Intent. This card fits my “sacrifice” theme and I will be looking to add one via trade or purchase in the very near future. 🙂

I have scoured many other Chainer lists and noticed that a lot of them do run Blood Artist and/or Falkenrath Noble. I just have never been able to make room for them.

Thank you again for the comments!

attrition, harvester of souls, black market, rune-scarred demon, diabolic revelation have worked really good in my chainer deck. I really like the build, what have worked best/worse with it?

    1. Thank you for visiting MTGCasualPlay.com!

Ah yes, those are definitely some very good ones there. I am currently testing Abhorrent Overlord, but if he doesn’t work out I will probably pick up a Rune-Scarred Demon. I like your other suggestions as well and may give them a try in the near future.

Honestly, Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief is always a house. Skullclamp + Reassembling Skeleton is always good. Necrotic Ooze.has produced fairly well and Gray Merchant of Asphodel has been amazing.

I have also just added Champion of Stray Souls so I am hoping to play EDH soon to try him out. 🙂

    1. Ah, yes… to Auto card on this website simply use the following: [card ]Exotic Orchard[/card ] (Without the space after “card”). Like so: Exotic Orchard.

Noting that you run both ashnod’s altar and reassembling skeleton, I recommend Bog Initiate, as it combos with the two for infinite sac/etb effects, which synergizes with Grave Pact, Dictate of Erebos, and Butcher of Malakir, and would also work well with Blood Artist/Falkenrath Noble if you decided to run them.

    1. Hey there, thank you for the comment! I am actually in the midst of retooling my Chainer deck. I always seem to tutor for the same pieces everytime so I can win with Koko Puff or Gary loop. The Bog Initiate might be one of the key pieces I need to clear the table and have some extra fun. Great suggestion, thank you!
